What You Should Know About Gonorrhea

Amaka thought she had just another toilet infection.
For weeks, she battled unusual discharge and burning pains, buying antibiotics from the pharmacy. But nothing changed. By the time she finally went to the hospital, the doctor confirmed it wasn’t a “toilet infection”; it was gonorrhea.

Stories like Amaka’s are more common than many Nigerians realise. Gonorrhea is one of the most widespread sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in Nigeria. It can affect both men and women, infecting the genitals, rectum, and throat.

You can get gonorrhea by having vaginal, anal, or oral sex with someone who is infected. Pregnant women can also pass it to their babies during childbirth

Symptoms of Gonorrhea
In Men

Some men with gonorrhea may not show any symptoms. For those who do, common signs include:

  • White, yellow, or green discharge from the penis.
  • Burning sensation when urinating.
  • Painful or swollen testicles (less common).
In Women

Most women with gonorrhea do not show obvious symptoms. When they do, they are often mistaken for urinary tract infections (UTIs) or vaginal infections. Symptoms may include:

  • Painful or burning sensation when urinating.
  • Increased vaginal discharge.
  • Vaginal bleeding between periods.

The danger: Even without symptoms, gonorrhea in women can silently cause serious complications such as pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), infertility, and long-term reproductive health problems.

  • Includes hormonal assessments and procedures to detect potential fertility issues in either partner, enabling early intervention.
How is Gonorrhea Diagnosed?

Doctors can test for gonorrhea using:

  • A urine test.
  • Swabs from the throat or rectum (if you’ve had oral or anal sex).
  • Swabs from the urethra (in men) or cervix (in women).

Getting tested early is important to prevent complications and avoid unknowingly spreading the infection.

Can Gonorrhea Be Cured?

Yes, gonorrhea can be cured with the right treatment from a doctor. But it is important to:

  • Take all prescribed medication (do not stop halfway).
  • Make sure your partner also gets treated to avoid reinfection.
  • Understand that while treatment stops the infection, it cannot reverse permanent damage already caused.
Preventing Gonorrhea
  • Use protection (condoms) during sex.
  • Get tested regularly if you are sexually active.
  • Limit multiple sexual partners.
  • Avoid self-medication and visit a doctor for a proper diagnosis.
